Thomas Alan Waits, born December 7, 1949, is an American composer, known for his raspy, bourbon-soaked, cigar-shop voice and unique musical style that combines Chicago blues, beat poetry, and his own tenderheartedness.

The spectrum of Waits’ talents and styles are overwhelming. Though not a pop artist, Tom Waits’ influence on modern jazz, blues, and rock is remarkable and noteworthy, making him ideal to receive the honor of a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tom Waits[/lastfm] has released 23 albums including a live set and 2 soundtracks, and has even composed musical theater and an operetta. Bone Machine (1992) won a Grammy for Best Alternative Album, and later Mule Variations (2000) was awarded the Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. More recently, Waits released a 56-song, 3-disc set titled Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers, and Bastards in 2006. The set visits many of the genres of the American song tradition, and showcases the range of Waits’ musical styles and talents.

Waits has also had the great opportunity to record with numerous groups and artists including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]the Rolling Stones[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bonnie Rait[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ray Orbison [/lastfm]to name a few. Respect and reverence are paid to him in the cover recordings of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]the Ramones[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]the Eagles[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Robert Plant and Allison Kraus[/lastfm], and others. On [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Primus[/lastfm]’ 1991 release, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Waits was exposed to a new generation as he performed the voice of “Tommy the Cat” on the single of the same name. Transferable artistic expression and talents are exhibited in Wait’s acting abilities, too, appearing in films like Bram Stokers Dracula, The Fisher King, Queens Logic, and At Play in the Field of the Lord.

Tom Waits will be presented by [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young [/lastfm]on Monday evening in the 2011 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony.
