The world was hit hard by the passing of the Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch a/k/a MCA. While many remember him for his role in the groundbreaking hip-hop group, Yauch’s efforts as a filmmaker and head of Oscilloscope Laboratories were less publicized.
However, after Oscilloscope gained distribution rights to a documentary film called Shut Up And Play The Hits about popular New York based dance-punk band LCD Soundsystem that will be sure to change–at least for one night.
On July 18, fans in 70 cities – including San Francisco, Berkeley and Palo Alto – will get to see the film about LCD Soundsystem’s final days as a band. The documentary–which features Chuck Klosterman narrating in the trailer and camera work by Spike Jonze–received critical acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival.
Directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, Shut Up And Play The Hits is a narrative-style film that documents LCD Soundsystem’s last-ever show at New York’s Madison Square Garden on April 2nd, 200 after frontman James Murphy decided to disband at the height of LCD Soundsystem’s popularity.
Yauch said of the film:
“Perhaps having grown up in a band for most of my life – a band that formed when I was 16 years old – and having released our first record when I was still in high school, this film addresses so many questions. For instance, it can be pretty clear when a band starts, but perhaps less so when it ends, or how it should end. In that sense, it’s brilliant of James [Murphy] to end it in such a definitive way.”
