The rock world was shocked and saddened in 2010 when Paul Gray, bassist and founding member of masked Iowa heavy metal troupe Slipknot, was found dead in a hotel room of an accidental drug overdose at the age of 38.
This week, Des Moines doctor Daniel Baldi was charged with involuntary manslaughter in relation to Gray and seven others, accused of allegedly overprescribing pain medication which contributed to all eight overdose deaths.
“It is unprecedented to turn unfortunate deaths or medical results into a crime against a doctor,” said Baldi’s lawyer Guy Cook to the Des Moines Register about the charges, which could result in Baldi serving up to 16 years behind bars.
“None of it is going to bring back our brother Paul,” said Slipknot percussionist Shawn Crahan to the Register. “This epidemic of this sort of activity is becoming more and more … evident. It truly is becoming a problem amongst people. And it trickles all the way down to the youth. And awareness needs to be brought about. Hopefully justice will be served.”
Baldi has pleaded not guilty, and has been released on $16,000 bail.
Slipknot is expected to release an official statement regarding the case later on today (September 6).
