What do you get when you mix an amazing band, a questionable audio recorder and an even more questionable radio DJ? The following interview. I was planted in front of a TV over the weekend at the Treasure Island Music Festival. Yes, I was watching TV. As the fine music of Best Coast, Los Campesinos! and Divine Fits were filling the air, I was utterly invested in the San Francisco Baseball Giants and game 1 of the NLCS. I was rooting so hard I totally forgot about my scheduled 6:30 interview with one of my top 5 favorite contemporary bands and Treasure Island 2012 headliners: The xx. They have a new album out called Coexist which I’ve listened to about 2,739 times this year. In fact, I love them so much I flew down to LA in July to watch their first US show since 2010.
It. Was. Awesome.
Still though, the Giants might be going to the World Series!!!
Cell phone service is pretty spotty (at best) at music festivals. At around 6:32 I received 7 text messages that were written over the past hour. My friend with The xx’s label XL was looking for me… Unfortunately I was busy investing myself in a Giants 4-run rally.
I ran backstage, met with the band and had a nice chat. I’ll be honest, I was a little frazzled and I kind of winged it, but I’m happy with how this turned out. I love just having conversations with bands I admire and presenting something real to you. Plus, any excuse to talk about the greatness of Aaliyah is always welcome.
I’d like to thank The xx for being so cool to me and making a sophomore album as great as Coexist. You should buy it.
Their set last night was so good I almost forgot the Giants lost. Almost.
