Spud (aka “Surfer Spud”) was born and grew up in Montreal, Canada, but then moved to California after hearing The Beach Boys where he quickly adapted to his new life in San Mateo, CA. After seeing Star Wars , Spud pursued a career in filmmaking and graduated with a degree in Film at San Francisco State University. But Spud was also passionate about music and radio so he got an internship at LIVE 105 answering the request lines for DJ Steve Masters. Shortly thereafter, Spud was hired in the promotions department where his first assignment was to drive his favorite band DEVO to a LIVE 105 free concert.
After working several years at LIVE 105 concerts and club nights, Spud got promoted to the programming department and became LIVE 105 Program Director Richard Sands’ assistant. Spud was instrumental in planning and coordinating such notable concerts and events like the LIVE 105 Listener Appreciation Party, the Modern Rock Cruise, BFD and Not So Silent Night. Spud also got the station involved with the Surfrider Foundation and organized local beach cleanups in addition to providing the station with daily surf reports.
In his free time, Spud surfs, snowboards and plays in his own surf band called Drifting Sand. He also collects Hawaiian and tiki artifacts, loves live music and most Britpop bands, roots for the San Francisco Giants and works part-time for Al Jardine of the Beach Boys. Finally, Spud is the station’s resident historian so if you have any questions about the history of LIVE 105, just ask Spud!
