Aaron Axelsen’s Top 5 New Bands You Need To Know
So much good new music out there at the moment that I felt compelled to highlight my five favorite current new bands: HUNTER HUNTED, RATKING, RDGLDGRN, KATE BOY and KID KARATE! All new and emerging acts that hopefully will be playing BFD 2014.
5 NEW BANDS YOU NEED TO KNOW
#1 HUNTER HUNTED
Named after one of my favorite ‘90s video games, new Los Angeles based indie-dance outfit are the proud owners of my latest music obsession: a 5-track EP that has been monopolizing my ears for weeks now and features a future radio smash with ‘Operating’ (which I’ve been spinning to a strong reaction on Soundcheck each week) It’s seriously all I listen to right now, I think I may need some help in fact. I.E. while running, playing basketball, commuting to work and back, in the shower and even spooning with it at night in my bed… hell, I sadly watched Game Of Thrones and Walking Dead last night on mute while listening to this fantastic debut EP.

I actually caught this innovative underground hip-hop project last year in NYC at the CMJ music convention but it really wasn’t until I spent time with their latest EP ‘Wiki93’ that I was emphatically blown away. RATKING fuse together an eclectic arrangement of drum & bass, noise, techno, progressive hip-hop and then accented all by dropping wicked rhymes to create a revolutionary sound. They’ve amassed a strong following thus far with similar fans of Death Grips, Odd Future, Tyler, The Creator and Die Antwoord all coming on-board and have recently inked with independent powerhouse XL recordings (Vampire Weekend, Atoms For Peace, Sigur Ros, Friendly Fires, SBTRKT) and with one of my favorite management teams Monotone (Jack White, Foster The People, Cold War Kids, Sir Sly)
The growing trend continues of new artists frustrating poor ol’ English teachers by abandoning vowels for funky looking band names as displayed here by Washington, DC’s new rock trio RDGLDGRN (Red Gold Green) The boys caught the attention of record producers Matt Watts and Kevin Augunas who recently have worked with the likes of The Lumineers and Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, and subsequently the band were inked to Watts’ Universal imprint label Fairfax Records. RDGLDGRN then traveled out West to record at the legendary Sound City Studio’s in Los Angeles, where they were all nice enough to let some dude named Dave Grohl bang on the drums during a few tracks.
#4 KATE BOY
If you have a penchant – like me – for dark, haunting and ethereal electronic music by perhaps The Knife, Crystal Castles, Ladytron and/or female synthpop artists like Lykke Li, Little Boots, and fellow Swedes Niki And The Dove, then please lend your ears to this exciting new Swedish four-piece KATE BOY! Recently a new edition to the awesome roster over at Los Angeles based independent label IAMSOUND (Charlie XCX, MS MR, Salem, etc) look for Kate Boy to make their SF debut in early June 2013.
#5. KID KARATE
Kinda a musical amalgamation of Against Me!, White Stripes, Fugazi and Middle Class Rut, with vocals provided by an Irishman heavily influenced by Glenn Danzig…. Bay Area, I give you the upstart Irish two-piece KID KARATE! True, they released this song back in August but it wasn’t until I serendipitously stumbled into an Austin rock club at 1am a few weeks ago at SXSW where I discovered this kick ass new Duo from Dublin. Break out the Jameson and keep an eye out on these boys. (and Megan Holiday endorsed, too)
