You’ve heard Passion Pit all over Live 105, and by now you know that it’s impossible not to love the indie rock/synth sounds of the Cambridge, Massachusetts band. Passion Pit gets their unique name from a slang referring to drive-in-theaters, because of their privacy and romantic allure for teenagers. This five-piece band is composed of Michael Angelakos (lead vocals, keyboards), Ian Hulquist (keyboards, guitar), Xander Singh (synthesizer, samples), Jeff Apruzzese (bass, synth bass), and Nate Donmoyer (drums).
The band began when lead singer Michael Angelakos wrote a few songs for his then-girlfriend, which soon turned into the band’s debut EP entitled Chunk of Change. At first, Angelakos would perform his songs solo, accompanied by a laptop. After one of his solo gigs, Ian Hulquist approached Angelakos and expressed his interest in collaborating together and making sweet synth-y rock tunes for people to dance to. Angelakos agreed and lo and behold Passion Pit was born. After their EP release, Passion Pit was chosen as “Best New Local Act” in 2008. “Sleepyhead”, the first and only single to be released from the EP, got a great deal of exposure and the music video for “Sleepyhead” was included on Pitchfork’s Top 40 Music Videos of 2008.
The band released their first full-length studio album, Manners, in 2009 and have played in venues worldwide as well as toured with big name bands such as Muse. Their follow-up album, Gossamer, came out last year and was riddled with awesome hits. “Take a Walk” and “Carried Away” are just a few of the outstanding tracks on their newly released album and were recently performed by the band on SNL.
You can catch Passion Pit at LIVE 105’s BFD on May 19.
