The next ten days in Austin, Texas are going to be ‘standing room only’. The 21st edition of the South By Southwest Music, Film + Interactive Conference has arrived.
1000s of Stars, filmmakers film lovers and tech heads are already mingling on the SXSW red-carpet with the film and interactive portions of the festival underway Friday.
The next 9 days will be packed with some 130 feature films and dozens of shorts overlapped by another week of non-stop music when the music side kicks off. Austin will be packed, by then, as more than 2000 acts, from Coldplay to Cee-Lo, descend upon the hippest city in Texas.
At SXSW Interactive, National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden will speak live from Russia via teleconference, as will WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from London.
Organizers expect about 16,000 badgewearers at the film festival alone. Add a ‘zero’ to the end of that number, once the music starts playing.
Film features include “MusiJimi: All Is By My Side,” a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring André 3000, written and directed by 12 Years A Slave Oscar-winner John Ridley. “Frank” starring Michael Fassbender is a comedy about singer in an experimental rock band with Maggie Gyllenhaal as a theremin player. In the movie, the band actually plays SXSW.
“Chef” opens the festival, directed by Jon Favreau (The Elf, Iron-Man), who also stars in the film alonside Dustin Hoffman, Sofia Vergara, Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey, Jr. Favreau plays on out-of-work cook who operates a food truck while trying to mend fences with his family.
The big-screen adaptation of “Veronica Mars”, premieres, with TV ‘Veronica’ Kristen Bell starring.
This year, SXSW organizers decided to include TV shows. A sneak preview of “Silicon Valley,” an HBO series about the Bay Area’s high-tech gold rush is among them.
There will be plenty of live panels discussions, workshops even a gaming expo to keep festival-goers occupied between screenings.
SXSW Film 2014 runs from March 7-15; SXSW Music March 11-16.
