Read the Fine Print: Artists to See at BottleRock

By Nicholas Gomez

BottleRock isn’t until May but it is never too early to start getting your personal schedule ready.  About a month ago the Napa festival released their daily line up for the three-day event.  The big names of the festival (Imagine Dragons, No Doubt, Foster the People, Cage the Elephant, Passion Pit) easily catch the eye.

However, it’s actually the artists towards the bottom of the festival poster that will make your day(s) at the festival feel complete.  Get out your magnifying glass and take a closer look at these sometimes overlooked artists. You may even go home that weekend with a couple of new favorite bands.

Big Talk

The drummer of The Killers, Ronnie Vannucci Jr., becomes the lead singer and rhythm guitar player of Big Talk.  After The Killers went on hiatus in 2010, Vannucci decided to expose the world to his own songs. Big Talk delves into genres like post-punk, classic rock, country, and indie rock.

The Mowgli’s

The Mowgli’s are a quintessential California band possessing roots in musicians like The Beach Boys, Neil Young, and The Byrds. Their songs are constantly joyous, causing listeners to dance and twist to the indie-folk, heartfelt tunes.

Zella Day

Arizona-based artist Zella Day first came into the spotlight in 2012 after she posted a cover of “Seven Nation Army” to YouTube. After success of the cover, Day focused on her own sound. Critics often compare Day to artists like Stevie Nicks and Lana Del Rey.

Finish Ticket

Finish Ticket are a local indie-rock band from Alameda. They have recently gained major success playing in festivals like Outside Lands 2014 and Live 105’s BFD 2014. Finish Ticket have announced that they will be heading to London to record a new EP with Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, The 1975). If you plan on seeing Young the Giant’s set, I suggest checking these guys out too.

Fritz Montana

San Francisco’s own Fritz Montana are a blues/indie-rock band who have made their place in the local music scene. Fritz Montana prides themselves on hard-hitting drums, deep guitar riffs, and rough, yet tight, vocals. They played Live 105’s 2014 Soundcheck Holiday Party.

Trampled By Turtles

Minnesota’s Trampled By Turtles are a folk band gaining a lot of momentum lately. The themes of nature, solidarity, and angst are found in the band both in their lyrics and in their sound.

Emily Wolfe

Emily Wolfe is making a name for herself in her local music scene of Austin, Texas, and is now gaining attention from a national audience after performing at Austin City Limits. Wolfe’s songs are carried by her dreamy vocals, tasteful guitar strums, and deep bass lines.

Sneakout

Robert Fleming is the workhorse behind the band Sneakout, writing, performing, recording, and producing each track. The band has been gaining much attention as of late, even being played on The World Famous KROQ in Los Angeles. Fleming’s lyrics reflect on being young and living in the moment.
