So yeah, all you Outside Land attendees are already very familiar with the marque acts playing this year, like Mumford & Sons, The Black Keys, Kendrick Lamar and Sir Elton John, but one of favorite attributes of this seminal San Francisco music festival in Golden Gate Park each year is the cornucopia of new and emerging artists to discover!
Here are my top 7 picks of must see ‘under the radar’ acts performing this year at OSL 2015.
Saturday, 6:05pm @ Panhandle
San Jose’s own Charlie Yin, aka Giraffage, took his degree in Political Economicsfrom the University of California, Berkeley and subsequently used it to create some of today’s most compelling, dreamy and soulful electronic music to emerge out of the Bay Area underground in years.
Friday, 12:45pm @ Twin Peaks
New Zealand synthpop siblings Broods make ethereal, spellbinding and moody electro-pop that you can either listen to while channeling your inner goth at a graveyard while reading dark poetry OR while twirling around on the dancefloor at your favorite indie club night. Highly recommended for fans of Lorde, Purity Ring, Grimes, Say Lou Lou, Mr. Little Jeans and Chvrches.
Sunday, 1:00pm @ Sutro
Los Angeles retro garage rock specialists serve up infectious, ‘60s-esque, psychedelic-power-pop that sounds especially good while enjoying some tasty Ben & Jerry’s on the corner of Haight and Asybury in San Francisco. I know this from personal experience.
Sunday, 4:20pm @ Panhandle
Argentinian born and raised in So Cal, Ryn Weaver dominated the blogscene in 2014 with her massively received debut single ‘Octahate’ – which was produced by Michael from Passion Pit – and she’s since inked a major label deal with Interscope Records and has collaborated with the likes of Cashmere Cat, Charlie XCX and Benny Blanco.
UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA
Saturday, 2:05pm @ Twin Peaks
Portland by way of New Zealand indie rock outfit Unknown Mortal Orchestra, who is the brainchild of the very talented frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson, are the proud owners of one of 2015’s best albums with their sensational ‘Multi-Love’ record. Ruban, who is known in the music community as being a guitar virtuoso and having a strong penchant for psychedelic rock, expanded his musical horizons by introducing synthesizers and other vast new production elements into their latest brilliant release.
Sunday, 12:00pm @ Sutro
Sydney, Australia upstarts DMA’S respectfully pay homage and draw influence from the famed ‘90s UK indie scene, ala Oasis, Primal Scream, Happy Mondays, Supergrass, The Charlatans UK, et al, and just released a fantastic EP through one of my favorite American independent labels Mom & Pop records (home to Sleigh Bells, Jagwar Ma, Flume, Fidlar, Courtney Barnett)
Friday, 4:30pm @ Panhandle
College radio faves and much-adored indie-pop 5-piece Alvvays, hail from Toronto, serve up sugary and jangly guitar-pop perfection and have toured with everyone from Peter, Bjorn & John to The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. Ideal candidates for your 2015 summer soundtrack.
