My Chemical Romance Release Early Version of ‘The Black Parade’ Called ‘The Five of Us Are Dying’

"The Five of Us Are Dying" is an early iteration of "Welcome to the Black Parade."

It’s hard to believe that My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade was released one decade ago: Their sound helped define “emo” for a generation of high schoolers and late adolescents and the album’s title track, “Welcome to the Black Parade” is a cornerstone of its era. However, that launchpad for the band’s mainstream success started out as a collection of sounds and ideas, not yet refined into the throwback you know and love today.

“Welcome to the Black Parade” started out as a song called “The Five of Us Are Dying,” which opens with a similar, spare piano intro building into its screaming chorus. My Chemical Romance released the “rough mix” in anticipation of The Black Parade‘s 10-year-anniversary re-issue in September. Though MCR disbanded in 2011, it’s nice to see emo kids of the aughts leaning into their “legacy phase.”
