Live 105 turns 30 this October and we’ll be highlighting special stories and sharing memories all month long.
22 years ago today two titans of Britpop, Blur and Oasis, found themselves together in the intimate confines of a San Francisco radio studio for the first and only time in their storied careers, and this monumental event took place right here at Live 105 back on September 26, 1994.
Now keep in mind this was at the very pinnacle of the famed Blur Vs Oasis Britpop battle – which was sensationalized by every British tabloid at the time as well as documented by all the reputable music publication on the planet – and one in which England hadn’t seen or experienced since the days of Beatles Vs Rolling Stones.
The event was orchestrated by then Live 105 intern Aaron Axelsen and former Music Director and on-air personality Steve Masters, along with the assistance of Aaron’s best friend Adrian Moreria, who was an intern for Sony Music.
Adding to the folklore of this epic encounter was the fact that neither band were aware that their counterpart would be attending this pop-up and impromptu dueling radio interview and this created a rather interesting and somewhat chaotic scene indeed; the tension and awkwardness in the Live 105 studio that evening was palpable and almost a bit awkward and uneasy but the surprise factor also paved the way to a fun, lawless, riotous and unscripted interview
How this came to be:
Serendipitously, Blur just so happened to be in San Francisco on September 25, selling out the Fillmore with fellow Britpop heavyweights Pulp opening the show, and the London boys decided to stay an extra day in the city so they were around for a casual post-show radio interview.
On September 26, Manchester’s Oasis were making their San Francisco debut at iconic rock club Bottom Of The Hill, with local cult-faves Brian Jonestown Massacre opening the show, and thus the scene was set was set!
